Pond Maintenance Essentials

Description: Join us for a seminar designed to teach the fundamentals of pond maintenance. Learn how to keep your pond healthy and beautiful year-round with expert tips on water quality, algae control, equipment upkeep, and seasonal care. Perfect for beginners and pond enthusiasts alike!

Audience Target:
Adults and teens ages 10+ interested in ponds. No prior aquatic experience required.

Classroom Lecture

Workshop Benefits/Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the Basics of Pond Ecology – Participants will gain knowledge of how biological and chemical processes affect pond health.
  • Identify and Manage Common Pond Issues – Participants will learn to recognize and address problems such as algae blooms, murky water, and fish health concerns.
  • Perform Seasonal Maintenance Tasks – Participants will understand the key steps for maintaining a pond through each season, including winterizing and spring clean-up.
  • Operate and Care for Pond Equipment – Participants will learn how to maintain and troubleshoot essential pond equipment, including pumps, filters, and aerators.

Presenter: Horticulture Technician, James Hollenbeck has been at the Cape Fear Botanical Garden for 2 1/2 years. He has an A.A.S in Horticulture and has been working with ponds and fish for the majority of his life. He is incredibly passionate about ponds and loves to teach others about how to maintain a perfect aquatic balance. In his spare time, he likes to relax, take care of his apple trees and take walks on nature trails.
